Origins

River North, as you might guess, lies north of the Chicago River. That is until the river winds to the north, forming the neighborhood’s western border. Streeterville, which borders River North at Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile, lies between River North and Lake Michigan, and to the north of the neighborhood is the Gold Coast and Old Town. River North is part of the official Chicago Near North side community.

In the last several decades, River North has turned from industrial red light district to artist’s haven to upscale, close-in city enclave. The neighborhood began its renaissance in the 80s when ad agencies, photographers and art galleries moved into the low rent loft space and shaped the River North Gallery District. As its reputation grew, in moved the hipsters and the developers.
