Learn about Bucktown

Origins

Bucktown is a neighborhood northwest of Chicago’s Loop and west of Lincoln Park.  Residents and pundits alike will differ on the neighborhood’s true boundaries, but most will agree that its north and south boundaries are North Avenue (1600N) and Fullerton (2800N).  It’s western boundary is Western Avenue (2400W) and its eastern boundary is the Kennedy Expressway, Elston Avenue, or the Chicago River, depending on who you talk to.

Bucktown is one of the trendier and lively neighborhoods. There is a significant artists’ community that hosts its share of music and art festivals throughout the year.  The bustling six-corner intersection of North, Damen and Milwaukee Avenues on the south end of the neighborhood is a hip and hopping mix of clubs, boutiques, galleries, and dining opportunities. The nightlife is quite popular with the area’s young professionals.

Homes in Bucktown are quite unique, varying from restored cottages and lofts to larger brick homes. Evidence of the historic Polish Bucktown, reportedly named after a male goat, known as a buck, and its pastoral beginnings are seen throughout the small community in century old structures and cobblestone paths.  You’ll find evidence of Bucktown real estate’s past in the stately century-old brownstones and graystones mixed with a proliferation of new construction that has taken place over the past two decades – modern townhomes, Bucktown condo developments, and single-family homes from the modest to the pretentious.  Significant rehabs have also converted former industrial buildings into residential lofts.

Bucktown is very accessible to all parts of the city.  You’re right on the blue line train between the Loop and O’Hare airport.  Buses and taxis are omnipresent – as are most other amenities.
