The Austin Neighborhood located on the west side of Chicago is one the largest community areas by land area. It includes several distinctive areas including Midway Park, a historic district of restored 19th century residences, Galewood and the Island., which is a square mile in the far southwest corner of Austin.
The Austin neighborhood is bordered by the suburbs of Cicero to the south and Oak Park to the west and is isolated from other residential area in the city by the Eisenhower Expressway and Columbus Park and an industrial area. Henry Austin created the Austin subdivision and was a wealthy businessman and real estate speculator. Austin was originally within the township of Cicero and in 1899 was annexed to Chicago.
Public & Private Institutions Of Learning
Education is provided by public, private and home schools. State governments set overall educational standards, often mandate standardized tests for K–12 public school systems and supervise, usually through a board of regents, state colleges, and universities. Funding comes from the state, local, and federal government. Private schools are generally free to determine their own curriculum and staffing policies, with voluntary accreditation available through independent regional accreditation authorities, although some state regulation can apply.
