Decorative candles placed strategically throughout your Chicago home can add beauty and a sense of peace to your environment. However be aware of the danger of improper use and make sure your candles are safe. Here are a few ideas on how to safeguard your home from accidental misuse.

Allow enough space (at least one foot) between candles and textiles. Open windows and remember that any drafty areas or vents can cause curtains to blow into the flame, causing an accidental fire. Place candles on secure furniture and out of the reach of children and pets.

Keep candles, matches, and lighters out of the reach of children and pets.

Trim wicks so they are no longer than ¼” inch.

Extinguish all candles before sleeping and limit burning to four hours or less. Do not leave candles burning unattended.

Do not use a candle in place of a flashlight.

Keeping these tips in mind when placing and lighting your candles can ease your mind in regards to their safety in your Chicago home.
